First Steps With Oriental Rugs
by Pamela Ward ©2008
An initial encounter with the exotic world of oriental rugs might seem daunting, but have no fear. A simple overview can relieve concerns that you likely have about how to choose fine handmade rugs and decorate with them.
Start with defining a room's function. Ask the question, "How is this room going to be used?" Defining a room's use -- including who uses it, and how much it is used -- will simplify rug decisions regarding the choices available in color, pattern, fineness of weave, texture, and cost.
Once you know the purpose of your room, measure it. It's a great idea to always carry your room measurements and a rough drawing of the room. If you have not established a floor plan, don't worry. Most rooms suggest one rug size that will offer versatility with a multitude of plans.
With function, and floor plan decided, color and design come to the fore. Since rugs are a focal point like no other piece of decor in a room, the selection of colors and pattern should be thought out carefully. It is best when possible to start with the rug, because building the room from the floor up will be easier for you. If you have completed other things in the room, however -- wallpaper, paint, upholstery, drapery fabrics -- don't fret. Just accept that the room will now get to express its own opinion as to which rug is best for it. And, don't fight the cues your existing decor offers. If you come to realize that you don't like those cues, change them and start from scratch. Regardless of where you stand in completion of your room, there are important rules about color and pattern which a professional experienced in decorating with rugs will help you observe so that your room is successfully completed.
Your long-term satisfaction with the rug you choose will be based mostly upon how well it is made, and how well it is suited for its use in your home or office. This is an issue of rug type, which in turn is related to fineness of weave (knot density), materials and texture. Some rugs tolerate heavy foot traffic over the years better than others. If you need a rug in a heavily trafficked room or area of your home, by all means consider rugs that are more densely woven with better quality materials, which makes them more durable. Information about rug types and their relative values can be extremely detailed. You should discuss the merits of one rug type versus another with a rug dealer who will honestly explain the differences to you. Then you can determine what the best value is for you.
Purchasing an oriental rug should be interesting and fun. Done with consideration, it's a decision that will bring you a lifetime of pleasure and pride. We at Brandon Oriental Rugs are committed to assuring that outcome for you.
